General Policy

Original research papers and short communications are welcomed. The senior author on behalf of the co-authors MUST confirm that:
  1. they are not directly or indirectly affiliated with any organization or facility involved in production, sales, distribution or promotion of any tobacco product,
  2. the manuscript submitted has not been based on a grant provided by any tobacco industry or a related organization.
The manuscript should also be accompanied by a signed statement to the effect that it is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere and that the content has not been anticipated by previous publications.

All papers reporting results of investigations in patients and volunteer subjects must indicate that acceptable measures have been taken to obtain informed consent. Investigations in patients and healthy volunteers must indicate that informed consent was properly obtained and that the work was approved by the relevant Research Ethics Committee.

Reports of experiments involving animals must indicate that national legislation or the equivalent local standard for protecting animal welfare has been followed.

All manuscripts submitted for publication are subject to peer-review. A manuscript can be rejected if inconsistent with the mission of the journal, or for any scientific and/or technical reason determined by the reviewers and/or the editor-in-chief.

A manuscript submitted to Tobacco Induced Diseases must be written in clear, grammatical English. Papers that are not in good idiomatic English will be returned to the author without review.

Full Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only, and should be structured into sections as follows:
  • Title
  • abstract (synopsis of the work, limited to 250 words)
  • up to 5 keywords not already used in the title
  • introduction
  • methods
  • results
  • discussion
  • acknowledgements (details of supporting grants, permission for reproduction of copyright materials, etc.)
  • references

Authors' names should not include academic degrees/titles. A short form of the article's title should be provided as running title for publication on every page.

Short Communications

To be considered as a short communication, clinical and laboratory observations, case-reports or epidemiological findings should have a text of less than 1000 words with an abstract of less than 100 words; a maximum of two illustrations and tables and 10 references.
Style

For style information and lists of standard abbreviations, consult the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors, Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins, 1998.
  • Use metric units throughout the manuscript.
  • The use of footnotes is not permitted.
  • Single quotation marks should be used throughout the paper.
  • Whenever possible, drugs should be referred to by their generic name rather than by a proprietary name.
  • When a proprietary name must be used, it should begin with a capital letter to indicate this.

Tables

Each table must be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet with the title typed directly under the table. Do not use abbreviations. The title and footnotes to the table must contain all the information necessary to understand and interpret the table without reference to the text. Footnotes to tables should be identified by superscript lowercase italic letters and placed at the bottom of the table. Letters should be assigned to table footnotes alphabetically in order of appearance as the table is read horizontally.

Illustrations

All illustrations (photographs or line drawings) should be about two times of the intended final size. However, the final quality after reduction for print must be kept in mind when preparing an illustration. Photographs must be kept to a minimum and should be glossy prints. Highly recommended are illustrations or good quality scanned photographs on CDs ready for direct digital printing (resolution at least 300 dpi). Legends to figures and photographs should be placed under the illustration. Each legend to an illustration must contain all the information necessary to understand and interpret the figure without reference to the text. Illustrations in color will be accepted only if the authors defray the cost.

Quotations and Permissions

Quotations, tables, or illustrations taken from other publications are copyright and can only be reproduced with written permission from the copyright owner. Send author's and publisher's written permission with the manuscript.
Nomenclature and Abbreviations

For styling and abbreviation of isotopes, enzymes and other standard biomedical nomenclature consult the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors, Baltimore, Williams & Wilkins, 1998.

References

References should be numbered consecutively in the order that they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends in brackets "[ ]". The full list of references at the end of the article should be arranged in numerical order. Each reference should include the names and initials of all authors, the title of the article, the unabbreviated title of the journal, the year, the volume, and first and last page numbers. Titles of books should be followed by the place of publication, the publisher, and the year. References to 'unpublished observations' or 'personal communications' should be mentioned in the text but not included in the list of references. The titles of periodicals should be unabbreviated. The style is as follows:

1. Gruslin A, Perkins SL, Manchanda R, Fleming N, Clinch JJ. Maternal smoking and fetal erythropoietin levels. Obstetrics and Gynecology 2000; 95: 561-564.

Proofs

The corresponding author will receive one copy of the proof which should be corrected, signed and promptly returned to the address provided. Authors must defray the expense of any alteration after proofing. Should the alteration represent a major departure from the original refereed copy, permission from the editor must be obtained.
