Health hazards of chronic exposure of children to tobacco smoke through parental smoking (major headlines):

In utero exposure (during pregnancy)

Chronic prenatal exposure of unborn child to mother's passive smoking has been linked to:
  • Brain cancer
  • Cardiovascular abnormalities
  • Impaired immune system
  • Infant death
  • Leukemia, lymphoma
  • Malformations
  • Osteochondritis
  • Prematurity
  • Preterm birth


Postnatal exposure (from birth to adolescent)

Chronic exposure of infants and young children to parental or other people's tobacco smoke causes:
  • Asthma exacerbation
  • Cough & phlegm production
  • DNA damage
  • Dyspnea
  • Impaired lung function
  • Loss of appetite
  • Middle ear disease
  • Nasal mucociliary disorder
